Part 10 – Rat out of Hell

Eyeing the panicking Nev, the rat bared its teeth, then its eyes flickered and its head started turning from side to side as if finding something amiss. For a brief second it stared at the blank lichen-covered wall next to Nev then it raised its snout, sniffing the fetid air of the sewers as if to catch a drift.

With the rat distracted Nev took a chance and eyed his friends, silently pleading for help. Lau was still down, struggling to remove some unidentified muck from her face, and Melandia, having quickly wrapped a scanty bandage around her wound, was looking for her sword beneath the polluted waters.
Hearing the sound of Max coming up fast from behind, Nev deemed the situation ready for a quick retreat, leaving the Rat from Hell for someone else to properly deal with.

Panting from the fear nestled heavily in his chest, he slowly crapped sideways along the wall, putting distance between himself and the dire rat inch by inch. Unfortunately his personal Goddess of Luck had obviously taken the day off. The slightest sound of the hilt on his rapier striking the wall caused the rat to turn its head and look straight at him. For a brief moment their eyes locked and Nev recognized the fire of evil intelligence burning behind the eyes of the fiendish rodent. His heart dropped as it felt like time slowed down, almost step by step he saw the rat pushing away with it powerful hind-legs, sending it into a majestic jump with teeth barred and foam flying from its mouth, straight against his bared throat. Mesmerized by the glistening teeth approaching, Nev stood like nailed to the ground.

It felt like hours but only took a fraction of a second, and with the rat hovering in midair, time suddenly returned to its normal flow. Nev, feeling a surge of fear-induced adrenaline, reacted almost from pure instinct and threw himself sideways, connecting with Max who'd just stepped up to help, sending the big barbarian sprawling backwards. The move caused the rat to miss the Bard by mere inches, and unable to change direction it smashed straight into the wall, bouncing back to land on a small ledge right next to Nev who struggled to regain his balance and footing.

Figuring the crashing impact with the wall might finally have brought the rat down, Nev almost sighed in the relief, but then his eyes went wide and he stared with his mouth open as the rat slowly got back to its paws, turning to face him at all too close a range. Before he could even fumble for his dropped rapier, the rat jumped off the ledge and straight at him, murder in its red eyes.

Desperately, and with a speed and dexterity born out of years practicing dazzling tricks and feats, as well as the intense training on stringed instruments, Nev struck out and managed to grab the rat straight out of the air, getting a hold around its thick neck and halting its momentum inches away from his face
As his entire vision was suddenly filled by a snarling bundle of disease-ridden fur and lethal claws, Nev let out a scream of fear and swung the rat sideways, plunging it beneath the greenish foam-filled waters.

Fighting to free itself from his grasp, the rat threw its head from side to side, managing to break the surface and gasp for air, but with a strength born out of fear and panic, Nev held down the huge struggling rat and with all his weight he once more forced it beneath the water and held it there until its struggling spasms slowly subsided and after a few more seconds the rodent body went limp in his hands.

Panting from his adrenaline filled show of strength, Nev took a step back, supporting himself against the wall as he felt his heart pumping like mad and his head spinning. He felt weak and suddenly longed for a good warm bed in a warm and cozy inn far away from anybody who had ever heard the word 'adventure'. For a brief moment he contemplated this, then he mentally decided that he would settle for the inn and the bed.
"After all…" he smiled weakly… "Am I not a real adventurer now?"

With his eyes closed, lost in thoughts and too tired to really pay attention to his surroundings, he didn't notice what took place in the murky waters before he heard a curse and a gasp of surprise from behind. He opened his eyes and too let out a surprised gasp when he saw what had happened.

Just in front of him, right where the dead rat's rigid body had sunk beneath the water, the body of a male Human now slowly bobbled on the surface, face down. The body was naked and hairy, and from its position there was no telling what kind of person it had been, but for some the scene spoke loads of information.
"Wererat!", Ratsup gasped from behind as his small legs finally brought him up to Nev and Maximillian.
"A real freakin' Wererat! … and you killed it with your bare hands!" he looked at Nev and gave an admiring nod of respect.

"Awesomeness!" Max laughed and hit the stunned and partly recovered Nev on his back, almost sending him plunging forward into the dark waters. "That's the way! Our strength is no match for our enemies…!" he grinned.
"…but a slice of cheese is not so bad either!" Ratsup added with a grin!

The tired, wounded and bandaged Mel, who had finally managed to retrieve her grime-smeared sword, refrained from taking part in the laughter. She bent down to help the sputtering Lau to her feet, trying to help her get the worst of the stinking grime out of her robe.

Amid the male merriment, Nev suddenly had the feeling in his guts that something was amiss. He looked around and suddenly he felt the cold tendrils of dread creep down his back.

"Where is Amber?"
